The Very Hungry Caterpillar – by Eric Carle
A much - loved classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is full of vivid and colourful illustrations. Telling the story of how the egg becomes a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats before turning into a cocoon and becoming a butterfly.
Children can use their maths and literacy skills remembering and counting all the food that the caterpillar eats. We have been learning the Makaton signs for the days of the week.
It has been very exciting at Playgroup as we have been following the life cycle of our own real hungry caterpillars. The children have been checking on which stage they are all at when they come in every day. We have three caterpillars in their cocoons hanging upside down, getting ready to be a butterfly.
On the tuff-tray, we have used our fine motor skills to play with pom-pom eggs, pipe cleaner caterpillars, playdough cocoons and paper butterflies we have coloured in.
We have listened to The Butterfly Song and used our gross motor skills curling up and flapping our wings to learn about the four stages of becoming a butterfly – the egg, the caterpillar, the cocoon and the butterfly.
