Book of the Week 2 May 2022

What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Lydia Monks

What the Ladybird Heard is a brilliant rhyming adventure. On a farm full of noisy animals and a little tiny ladybird, two robbers called Hefty Hugh and Lanky make a cunning plan to steal the farmer's fine prize cow. However, little do they know that the tiniest, quietest creature of all has overhead their plot, and she has a plan of her own………

Several of the children have said they have this book at home and one child was able to recite the story for the children, helping them join in with the sounds and words.

We used our voices to make animal noises and different character voices, making loud sounds and quiet whispers. The children joined in with the rhymes they knew and learnt more with some good listening.

We talked about maps and how they told us where we could go and one child mentioned that their car had a map on a TV screen to help them.

We all got our binoculars out (our hands) to try and find the tiny ladybird on each page and talked about being able to see things near and far and how things can be big and small.
