Marvin Wanted More! By Joseph Theobald
Marvin is not a happy sheep. All the other sheep are bigger than he is and can run faster and jump higher than he can. Therefore, Marvin decides to do something about it. He eats and eats and eats, until he is so big that there is nothing left for him to eat in the world - at which point Marvin eats the world itself! But that is a step too far, and what went in is going to have to come out ...A rumbustious story that shows how it is possible to take some self-improvement just a little bit too far.
The children really enjoyed this story and joined in with telling the story at circle-time. We had our own big fluffy Marvin the sheep, who helped with the story too.
The children used their Makaton to sign the words ‘more’, ‘big’, ‘bigger’, ‘sick’ and ‘sheep’.
The children jumped up high on the spot seeing who could jump the highest and all stretched up towards the moon like Marvin.
In the book, Marvin eats the whole world and then doesn’t feel very well. When the world comes back out, lots of things come with it. The children recognized The Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty, a Kangaroo, a Church and we talked about where they all came from in our world. Many of the children talked about living in Stroud and also England.
We also saw some sheep in the fields when we went out on a walk.
